Bristol City FC: Millen pleased despite defeat

Bristol City began their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Charlton in the Spanish sun.

The Robins took on their League One counterparts at the St Lepe Stadium in Huelva, with new signings Yannick Bolasie, Ryan Taylor and Neil Kilkenny making their debuts.

Keith Millen’s team selection proved the game of two halves cliché true, as he made 11 changes at half time.

And it wasn’t until 20 minutes after the break that City fell behind.

Bradley Wright-Phillips was sent racing clear of the back four before poking the ball past Dean Gerken in goal.

But Jon Stead was on hand to level matters 16 minutes later, when he swept home an assist from Martyn Woolford.

However, a Johnnie Jackson header from a short corner two minutes from time saw the Addicks register a win.

Despite the loss, Millen managed to draw the positives from the game.

"It was a good workout for the lads on a good pitch,” he said.

“I was pleased with the way we passed the ball and with the chances we created.”

City will continue their pre-season on Friday, when they travel to Home Park to play Peter Reid’s League Two outfit Plymouth Argyle.

“We have picked up no knocks, and will be returning home on Wednesday with a fully-fit squad,” added Millen.
