Family fitness programmes coming to Bristol this autumn

There will be two family fitness programmes running in Bristol this September, with free places are available for families.

Programmes will be held at Easton Leisure Centre and Henbury Leisure Centre for families with young children looking to get fitter and healthier.

The Bristol MEND Programme, thanks to Bristol City Council, NHS Bristol and MEND Central, are offering local families the chance to secure a free place.

MEND stands for ‘Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it!’ - and the course is targeted at helping children between the ages of seven and 13 who are above the healthy weight range for their age and height to become healthier and more active with the support of their parents or carers.

The MEND Programme is the largest national scheme for tackling childhood weight-management and obesity and Bristol City Council is again able to offer additional places on this programme.

Children and families who have previously participated have achieved tremendous results.

The MEND Programme takes place after school twice a week for ten weeks.

The Easton programme runs from Monday 19 September through to Monday 28 November 2011.

The Henbury Programme runs from Wednesday 28 September through to Wednesday 7 December 2011.

A limited number of places are available on the course completely free of charge.

Councillor Jon Rogers, Cabinet Member for Care and Health, said: "This is an excellent programme because it involves the whole family helping children to change their eating and exercise habits whilst learning about nutrition.

“Previous families on the course have had a great deal of success and it changes families' lives. Children become healthier and fitter and their self esteem and confidence increases. I'd urge any families interested to find out more."

Places on the MEND Programme are being offered completely free on a first come, first served basis to families.

For more information on other MEND programmes in Bristol or to register for the forthcoming Programme please call 0117 922 3867 or email MEND@bristol.gov.uk or visit www.bristol.gov.uk/mend.

A parent or carer must accompany each child to the twice, weekly sessions and places must be booked in advance.

Parents wishing to check whether their child is a healthy weight or whether they might benefit from the MEND Programme can visit the MEND website www.mendcentral.org, which has a handy Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator.
