Making the most of your living room

The living room is usually thought of as the heart of the home, the place for evenings together, family gatherings and parties, but are you making the most of your living room? Adding finishing touches, personalising your space and using key pieces of furniture, such as display cabinets, will help to make your living room comfortable, stylish and perfect for the needs of your family.

If you have a busy home, with lots of people doing various activities at different times, the living room may become a bit of a dumping ground, especially if you’re in a hurry, however there are ways of avoiding clutter and maximising the space available in your living room.

Maximising your storage space

Many people say that their homes lack storage and as a result, they end up with clothes draped over chairs, boxes littered around the house and the sofa resembling a tip. If this sounds like your home, why not consider some of the innovative storage options around?

Furniture companies have come up with myriad ideas to boost storage space and provide a solution for people who have living rooms that double up as guest rooms, studies and playrooms; one of the best solutions is to use shelving units and display cabinets to show off your possessions, rather than worrying about finding cubby holes to stash them away. Exhibiting photographs, books and ornaments will help to create a personalised touch, as well as removing clutter from your floors and work surfaces.

If you have children and you’re struggling to navigate your way around the room without stumbling over teddy bears or jigsaw pieces, storage boxes and buckets could be a handy investment and you can use chests of drawers and units to store books, CDs and DVDs.

Creating a multi-purpose space

The living room is an important room in most households and it usually has a variety of functions, especially if you have children or you work from home. Creating a multi-purpose space may seem like a tricky task, but it can be done simply without spending hours working out designs or spending hundreds of pounds.

The key to success when it comes to making your living room a versatile domain lies in using the space wisely; if you have an area under the stairs lying vacant, for example, why not put a desk and shelving unit in to house files, books and your desktop computer? If you are struggling for bedrooms, buying a sofa bed is a great idea; not only will you have somewhere comfortable to sit in your living room, but you will also be able to invite guests to stay.

Personalising your living room

Most people have a basic style or design in mind when they start planning their living room but adding a personal touch will help to make your room unique. Displaying family photographs and prints of places you have visited is a great way of bringing back happy memories, as well as making your living room stand out from the crowd.

If you fancy decorating the walls, rather than filling shelving units with photograph frames, canvases are a brilliant idea and you can add a funky touch with pop art, retro prints or billboard posters. You can also create your own art gallery by displaying children’s masterpieces.

Most people spend lots of time in their living room, so it’s important that you feel at home and are able to relax and unwind. To avoid clutter use cabinets, units and shelves to display items and tidy toys, books and CDs away and put your own stamp on the room by adding personalised touches and creating a theme which suits your style and taste.
